Quality Engineering Basics: Putting It All Together
A look at putting all ten topics from the series into practice.
Putting It Into Practice
Welcome to the final entry in the quality engineering basics series. In this series, I’ve covered bug reporting, bug retrospectives, debugging, types of testing, exploratory testing, risk analysis, automated vs. manual testing, prioritizing bugs, quality metrics, and incident reports.
So now what?
Whether you are building a foundation for quality engineering best practices and processes or working to improve your skills, these ten topics can help you on your journey.
If you are setting up quality engineering best practices and processes, it might look like this:
Quality Metrics can be a great starting point. Metrics can be used to measure whether quality is improving as you implement best practices and processes. They can also show you where to focus your efforts for the most impact.
Risk Analysis to determine where testing efforts are needed.
Types of Testing, Automated vs. Manual Testing, Exploratory Testing to determine how to test.
Bug Reporting and Debugging to increase the value and effectiveness of testing.
Prioritizing Bugs so that everyone knows what bugs are most important to fix.
Bug Retros and Incident Reports can help prevent the same issues from happening again.
These steps loosely correspond to the stages measure (metrics), plan (risk analysis, automated vs. manual testing, types of testing), execute (exploratory testing, bug reporting, debugging), and learn (bug retros and incident reports). You can also end on quality metrics for a report stage.
If you want to improve your own skills, pick a topic or two, do a deep dive in those areas, and then repeat with another.
