Today’s Bite-Sized Self-Care: Soothing Scents
Until recently, I never paid much attention to scents and smells. Growing up, I had a lot of sinus and allergy issues, and with that comes a hindered sense of smell. I didn’t know what I was missing until I discovered the concepts of scent memory1 –the connection between smells, memories, and emotions–and aromatherapy, which involves using scents, often essential oils, to enhance well-being.
While I’m not convinced by all the claims made about aromatherapy, the research-backed idea of scent memory really resonates with me. It's intriguing how certain smells can evoke strong emotional responses and, from my own experience, how a pleasant aroma can significantly boost my mood.
This is especially true with the smell of the ocean, which I adore. There's something about the fresh, salty air that instantly elevates my spirits. Whether I'm at the beach, floating in the ocean, or out on the water, the scent brings a sense of peace and joy that's hard to match.
I still fight with allergies/sinus issues and trouble smelling, but now I make an effort to appreciate what I can and do smell.

In the spirit of the proverb 'stop and smell the roses,' today's challenge invites you to take a brief pause in your day to appreciate the simple pleasures of life through scent. Find a soothing aroma that you enjoy – it could be flowers, a favorite perfume, a scented candle, or even the smell of fresh rain or a dark chocolate bar – and allow yourself a moment to experience and savor it fully.
